BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University earned the top spot in public administration in the 2019 Academic Ranking of World Universities’ global ranking of academic subjects. Two additional IU programs ranked in the top 10 in their subject areas, and a total of eight programs secured spots in the top 50 in their respective areas.
“This No. 1 ranking reflects the world-class reputation of the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, which continues to serve as a top training ground for students who are preparing for careers in which they will take on some of the most vexing challenges facing our state, our nation and our world,” IU President Michael A. McRobbie said. “It is also a tremendous tribute to the school's dedicated administrators, faculty and staff, and their relentless commitment to understanding how our world is changing, responding to those changes and contributing to a better society for all.”
The O’Neill School offers students access to programs in public affairs and public administration fields at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels on campuses in Bloomington and Indianapolis. The school was the first in the U.S. to combine environmental sciences with public management, policy and administration.
“It's clear the O’Neill School has developed a global reputation for excellence in public administration and other areas,” O’Neill School Dean John D. Graham said. “This recognition is yet another strong signal that our faculty are conducting important and influential scholarship that is having an impact not just in Indiana or the United States but around the world.”
IU also ranked in the top 10 in the subject areas of library and information science (No. 3) and communications (No. 7). Other programs ranked in the top 50 include business administration (No. 11), sociology (No. 13), finance (No. 15), management (No. 34), economics (No. 36) and political science (No. 45).
“We are also extremely pleased to see so many other IU academic programs, spanning a wide range of disciplines, earn high global rankings, which affirm the exceptional work being done by our first-rate faculty,” McRobbie said.
