BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs Professor Kosali Simon has been named to the Congressional Budget Office’s Panel of Health Advisers, the office announced earlier this month.

Simon, a Herman B Wells Endowed Professor and the university’s associate vice provost for health sciences, is one of 21 advisers who will serve in the coming year. Simon and her colleagues will provide year-round expertise on a variety of issues relating to health policy issues including participating in the annual meeting of the panel.

The panel consists of widely recognized experts in health policy and the health care sector. Members of the panel have a variety of backgrounds, areas of expertise, and experience, and are selected to represent a variety of perspectives and backgrounds so that the agency can gather information and insights from experts with diverse views as well as from the interactions between those experts at panel meetings.
Simon, an internationally recognized health economist, is a research associate of the National Bureau for Economic Research, a group with which she has been affiliated since 2002. She also serves as Vice President of governing body of the Association for Public Policy Analysis and management (APPAM) and Editor of the Journal of Health Economics.

“We at the O’Neill School and at Indiana University are incredibly proud of Dr. Simon’s appointment,” said O’Neill School Dean Siân Mooney. “Her deep expertise in the area of health care policy, particularly health insurance reform, makes her a perfect candidate to advise national leaders on these vital and rapidly expanding issues.”

According to the CBO, the office engages with members of the panel throughout the year—for example, calling on them for advice on how to address analytical questions that arise in the preparation of studies and cost estimates. Through those interactions, the office and its analyses benefit from the advisers’ understanding of cutting-edge research and the latest real-world developments in health care delivery and financing.
